Biochemistry
The Biochemistry Cycle of Study is designed to give you an understanding of how the building blocks of life work. Matter is made of atoms and once you understand how these atoms behave, you can start to unlock the larger developments of life like proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids.
Cellular Biology
This Cycle focuses on the smallest unit of life - the cell. Cellular structure is explored beginning with the cell membrane and the transport of molecules across this border. We then learn how the cell performs its many functions using its “tiny organs” or organelles. We end focusing on how cells are made for growth and repair.
Molecular Biology
This Cycle examines the interactions of biomolecules and the principles of inheritance. We explore DNA, explain how the cell makes proteins, and gain an understanding into how genetic traits are passed to offspring. We finish with a look at the exciting field of biotechnology.
Organismal Biology
The Organismal Biology Cycle of Study is a brief introduction to how the smaller parts of the body affect an organism as a whole, and how to navigate around the human body using proper medical terms. In addition, the important concept of homeostasis is revisited in this Cycle.

How To Approach This Course
Getting ready for one of the most challenging courses in college takes hard work. This course can help.
But where should you start?
START:
We all have gaps in our knowledge, but most of the time we don’t know where they are. We strongly encourage you to start this course by taking the COURSE ASSESSMENT (link on your Desktop). The results will help you focus your studying and make the best use of your time.
LEARN:
Using the results from your COURSE ASSESSMENT, start in the Cycle of Study that has the greatest need.
- A Cycle of Study is sort of like a “Unit”- it is a series of interrelated topics. The Cycles of Study are: Biochemistry, Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, and Organismal Biology. Click “Learn more” to enter a Cycle of Study.
- First you will see the Cycle of Study starting page with valuable information about the goals of the Cycle.
- Within each Cycle of Study are focused Sections:
- Within each Section, start with the Section pre-Quiz. This gives you your baseline for the specific content in the Section. This is required; the post-Quiz for a Section won’t open if you skip this step!
- Read and Complete the Section Concepts content (Notice the “+” symbols- these are where you can open the information hidden under the headings.)
- Along the way, make flashcards, take notes, create diagrams, or use whatever your preferred method may be.
- To get practice with the material, download and complete the Applied Learning Activity (ALA) for that Section. The link to this fillable Word document is on the bottom of the Section page under Section Resources- click “Document download.”
- Doing something active with the material is a key step in learning. The ALA Answer keys will be available for you to check your understanding- don’t be tempted to peak until you’ve tried to do the ALA on your own!
- Take the Section post-Quiz. Did you improve? Are there still topics you need to review?
- Be sure to click the “Finish Section” button on the bottom of the Section page after you have taken the Section post-quiz, to mark that Section ‘complete.’
- After you complete one Section, move to the next Section until you have finished the entire Cycle.
- It’s a game! Notice that, along the way, you accumulate points: for taking the pre-quiz, for taking the post-quiz, for passing the post-Quiz, and for Finishing the Section (be sure to click that button after the post-quiz!) If you skip a step in the process, you don’t earn those points. Have fun tracking your Discoveries and overall Ranks on your Desktop!
- On your Desktop also notice the Gradebook, where you can track your progress and all of your quiz scores.
FINISH, and SUCCEED:
Take the COURSE ASSESSMENT again and see how far you have come!
Working hard now will help make sure you are ready for your next steps forward. Good luck!
CYCLES IN DEVELOPMENT
Evolution
The Evolution Cycle of Study explores what is likely the most important and most misunderstood of all topics in biology. Evolution is critical to every aspect of life and has shaped every living being on Earth. By focusing on the variation that mutations provide to populations, we will learn that not all variations survive, resulting in differences in populations over time. Individuals don’t evolve, but populations do, and the products of evolution are all the splendor and diversity of life that we see around us today.
Ecology
The Ecology Cycle of Study probes the tangled web of interactions between living organisms, and between living organisms and the environment. This Cycle examines these interactions across trophic levels, and the roles each organism plays in a cycle of matter and flow of energy. Finally, we consider how humans have an influence on the Earth like nothing ever has: how human choose to use Earth’s natural resources will determine the fate of many species, including our own.
Math in Science
This Cycle of Study is provided to help students perform the many and various math computations and graphing that are commonplace in Science. Students should use the information and activities to solidify their understanding of key math concepts, as they are brought to life in science. Students should also refer to this information as they engage topics and questions throughout the Integrated Biology text and Active Learning Activities (ALA’s).
Skills for Success in Science
This Course introduces students to practical skills and concepts that are common in health care and general science settings. Learn the skills and techniques that are a necessary part of being a successful health professional and foster confidence in laboratory and academic settings.
